Margaret McLay - Teacher for Accounting

I always wanted to be an accounting teacher. At school I was good at maths and english but it was accounting that I enjoyed the most. That is why I studied accounting at university. I have a BCom degree from Canterbury University, majoring in Accounting and Economics. In both subjects, my focus is in management or cost accounting and micro-economics. Although my father was a teacher, I come from a business background. One of my grandparents was an accountant in the freezing works industry and the other was an orchardist. In the extended family, one had a men's outfitters business and another were also orchardists and grape-growers. One of my sisters is an accountant and another sister works in the bank. One of my sons works in the bank as a data analyst, another tests radioactive medical supplies used to detect cancer and my daughter works in production planning in a factory which makes windows and doors. The job of an accountant has changed over the years due to software development. So too has the subject called accounting, which has moved from a vocational bookkeeping focus to a more academic subject. Schools offer accounting as a subject because students learn skills and knowledge which can be applied to personal financial decision making or any workplace in their futures as well as a career pathway in accountancy or finance industry.
